Burr Elementary School

Summary:

Burr Elementary School is a public K-8 school in Chicago, Illinois, serving 478 students and consistently maintaining a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. This high-performing institution significantly outperforms the Chicago Public Schools District 299 and the state of Illinois in academic proficiency across all grade levels and subjects.

Burr Elementary School's performance is particularly strong for certain student subgroups, with its white students ranking 97th out of 1,392 Illinois elementary schools and its special education students ranking 108th out of 1,195 Illinois elementary schools, both earning 5-star ratings. The school also has relatively low chronic absenteeism rates compared to the district and state averages, and its spending per student is higher than the district average.

For example, Pritzker Elementary School, located just 0.6 miles away, also performs well, while other nearby schools, such as Sabin Elementary Magnet School and De Diego Elementary Community Academy, struggle academically. Burr's success may be attributed to its relatively low percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and its higher spending per student compared to the district average.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote New Prinicpal in the past two years is energetic, involved, interested and strongly motivating our students to perform. The teachers are strong, compassionate and are willing to work with you and your child to make sure they get the best education possible. I am very impressed thus far with Burr including their community involvement, standard of care and educational goals for my child.

I highly recommend Burr Elementary to anyone thinking about bringing their pre-K, Kindergarden and first grader there. I was surprised myself in bringing my kindergardener there as I thought there would be issues with gangs, language barriers, and security. I was incredibly wrong as this area has changed incredibly since I lived there 10 years ago as a student. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
