Burnside Elementary Scholastic Academy

Summary:

Burnside Elementary Scholastic Academy is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299. The school has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past several years and currently has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, serving a predominantly low-income student population with a high chronic absenteeism rate.

Burnside Elementary's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) exams, is generally lower than the district and state averages. In 2023-2024, only 37.7% of Burnside students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 30.5% for the district and 41.2% for the state. In math, the proficiency rate at Burnside was just 13.8%, significantly lower than the district (18.3%) and state (28.4%) averages. The school's African American students perform relatively well compared to other Illinois elementary schools, but its low-income and male students struggle, ranking in the bottom 50% and bottom 35-40% respectively for ELA and math.

Burnside Elementary has a relatively high per-student spending of $27,425 in 2022-2023 and a low student-teacher ratio of 11.4, suggesting it has access to more resources than some of its peers. However, this does not seem to be translating into stronger academic outcomes, at least not for the student population as a whole. Nearby schools, such as McDade Elementary Classical School, have significantly higher proficiency rates, while Ashe Elementary School and Pirie Elementary Fine Arts & Academic C have even lower proficiency rates than Burnside.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
