Brennemann Elementary School

Summary:

Brennemann Elementary School is a public school in Chicago, Illinois, serving 440 students in grades PK-8. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 688 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Brennemann Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Illinois elementary schools, with a ranking of 1696 out of 2067 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. The school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 17.9% in 2019-2020 to 43.5% in 2023-2024, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Academically, Brennemann Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state, with only 15.3% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 6.9% in Mathematics in the 2023-2024 school year. The school also struggles to support its diverse student population, with subgroups like Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with disabilities performing in the bottom quartile of Illinois elementary schools.

When comparing Brennemann Elementary to nearby schools in the same district, the performance gap is evident. Schools like Blaine Elementary and Hawthorne Elementary Scholastic Academy, which are within a 1-mile radius, consistently outperform Brennemann Elementary across all academic measures. This raises concerns about equity and access to quality education within the district, especially given Brennemann Elementary's high spending per student and relatively low student-teacher ratio, which suggest that resources are not being effectively utilized to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is my child's first year going to Brennemann and it has been the worst!! from teachers to the main office nothing but difficult unresolved situations. First my child was enrolled two weeks before school and the reason it was so late was because I had to just show up because nobody returned my phone calls, then when I tried to sign him up for the bus service I specifically said I wanted him to be taken back to his daycare because he was only doing a half day. On the first day of school I called to verify that the bus service was approved and that they had the correct address they didn't ( big surprise). When I arrived back to the school to fill out paper work for change of address they apologize because the guy who helped me was new ( who leaves a new person at the desk by themselves with delicate information). Now it will take 7- 10 business days to get an approval for the bus route. On the seventh day I called the department of transportation to see if it was approved because by now I have been making arrangements to pick my son up at 11:30 and take him to his daycare and rush back to work to find out they haven't even gotten the request yet, of course by this time now I call the school to speak to the case manager and assistant principle and they both were in meetings which is fine until I did not receive a call back. I called the department of transportation again the next day to see if they made a mistake and the lady then said his request was denied because it has to be in a one mile radius of the school ( which I think is dumb ) so I called the school again and they were in meetings again so I told the front desk lady that if she does not give me a call back I will pull my son from the school and look what a surprise she called me back within an hour I guess she finally got out of her three day meeting. After all that I sent my sister to pick my son up from school and of course I called when she was on the way, but the worst thing was they let her take him without showing an I'D and when I asked about it the lady in the office said well you called and said your sister was on her way and I said what does a "sister" look like. Terrible!! Now to the teacher, on the first day of school my son's father and I dropped my son off at school and everyone expressed how excoted they were that two parents were doing a drop off which is really exciting but, then the next day the father was not present and my son was crying because he did not want to leave me and the teacher says to me " he does not act like this with dad, maybe dad should drop him off and you should do pick up" like who says that to a parent. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
