Centennial High School

Summary:

Centennial High School is a public high school located in Champaign, Illinois, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,444 students. It is part of the Champaign CUSD 4 district, which is ranked 539 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Centennial High School has consistently ranked in the middle to upper-middle range among Illinois high schools, with its statewide ranking ranging from 215th to 303rd out of 697-699 schools over the past 5 years. However, the school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with White and male students tending to perform better than Hispanic, multi-racial, and low socioeconomic status students. Centennial High School's four-year graduation rate has ranged from 77.3% to 84.8% over the past 5 years, slightly below the state average, and its dropout rate has fluctuated between 3.4% and 7.5%, also slightly higher than the state average. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 18.6% in 2019-2020 to 51.3% in 2021-2022, well above the state average.

Compared to its neighboring schools, such as Mahomet-Seymour High School and Central High School, Centennial High School's performance is generally lower across various metrics, including statewide ranking, graduation rates, and test scores. This may be partly due to the school's relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 51.52% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. While Centennial High School's spending per student has increased from $13,654 in 2020-2021 to $17,232 in 2022-2023, this increased spending has not yet translated into significant improvements in academic outcomes, and the school's challenges with chronic absenteeism may be impacting its overall performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A public high school fraught with public high school problems seen in larger urban areas...drugs, the necessity for in-school police officers, and poor administrative leadership. The AP classes offered are alright, as they must adhere to a national curriculum. Many teachers are far left of center and use their classrooms as bully pulpits for their personal political beliefs. There are no classical literature selections in the English literature classes, just poor quality contemporary works espousing social ills of the time. What happened to classic authors who add value to students' cultural intelligence? The pickup and drop off are sheer mayhem. The communication from the school is poor. Our child would have gone elsewhere were we not stuck in Champaign. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
