Douglas Elementary School

Summary:

Douglas Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Belleville, Illinois, serving 248 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the Belleville School District 118, which is ranked 480 out of 813 school districts in Illinois and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Douglas Elementary School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 11.6, the school faces several challenges. It has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 10.6% in 2019-2020 to 31.8% in 2023-2024, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Academically, the school's proficiency rates on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) and Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rate in ELA for all grades was 25.4%, compared to 39.2% for the district and 41.2% for the state. Additionally, 66.94% of Douglas Elementary School's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages.

When comparing Douglas Elementary School to other nearby schools within the same district, it becomes evident that the school is underperforming academically. For instance, Roosevelt Elementary School, which is located just 1.71 miles away, consistently outperforms Douglas Elementary School in both ELA and Math proficiency rates across all grade levels. Despite the school's low academic performance, Douglas Elementary School has a relatively high per-student spending of $17,221 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the district and state averages. This raises questions about the effective allocation of resources and the need to explore ways to improve the school's academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
