Wheeling High School

Summary:

Wheeling High School is a public high school located in Wheeling, Illinois, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,760 students. The school is part of the Township High School District 214, which is ranked 133 out of 813 school districts in Illinois and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Wheeling High School's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 26.4% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in SAT Mathematics, compared to 39.4% for the district and 26.1% for the state. However, the school performs better in certain subgroups, such as African American and White students, who rank higher than the state averages in their respective categories. Wheeling High School has also seen a decline in its four-year graduation rate, from 93.3% in 2019-2020 to 86.1% in 2023-2024, and an increase in its dropout rate, from 2.6% in 2019-2020 to 1.1% in 2023-2024. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 14.9% in 2019-2020 to 36.6% in 2023-2024.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Buffalo Grove High School, Prospect High School, and John Hersey High School, which are all part of the same district, Wheeling High School's performance is generally lower. Schools in different districts, such as Glenbrook North High School and Adlai E. Stevenson High School, also significantly outperform Wheeling High School across various metrics. These findings suggest that Wheeling High School faces several challenges, including declining academic performance, increasing chronic absenteeism, and disparities in subgroup outcomes, which will need to be addressed to improve student success and better serve the community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
