Waiakeawaena Elementary School

Summary:

Waiakeawaena Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Hilo, Hawaii, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 684 students. The school is part of the Hawaii Department of Education district, which is ranked 1 out of 1 in the state and rated 5 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Over the past 10 years, Waiakeawaena Elementary has consistently ranked in the middle to lower range of Hawaii elementary schools, typically between 80-125 out of 193-207 schools. Its SchoolDigger rating has also fluctuated between 2-3 stars out of 5. The school performs particularly well for its African American students, ranking 1 out of 160 Hawaii elementary schools and receiving a 5-star rating. However, its rankings for other student subgroups, such as Hispanic, Pacific Islander, and Special Education students, are in the lower half of the state. Waiakeawaena Elementary's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on Smarter Balanced Assessments and the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA), is mixed, with the school performing above the state average in some grade levels and subjects, but struggling in others, particularly in mathematics.

Waiakeawaena Elementary's high chronic absenteeism rate of 22.7% is a concern, as it can significantly impact student learning and academic achievement. This is an area that the school and district should focus on addressing. Compared to nearby schools in the Hilo area, Waiakeawaena Elementary's performance is generally on par with or slightly below the nearby schools, such as Haaheo Elementary and Ernest Bowen DeSilva Elementary, which have higher overall rankings and academic proficiency rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote THE LEADERSHIP HAVE NO VISION OR VIRTUES TO INSTILL ON THE STUDENTS OVERALL. NOT ALL BUT MANY OF THE TEACHERS SEEM TO BE MORE INTERESTED IN THE JOB ASPECT OF TEACHING THAN IN TEACHING, AND ARE WORKING FOR RETIREMENT. THE SCHOOL FOLLOWS THE TRENDS OF THE WORLD, THE GENERAL TEACHER/STUDENT RATIO IS 1/25+, AND THE PARENTS WE MINGLE WITH ALL HAVE CONCERNS AND WISH THERE WAS A BETTER SCHOOL FOR THEIR CHILDREN. A COUPLE OF THE PARENTS ARE HAPPY TO SEE THEIR CHILDREN IN THE LOCAL BAND. WE HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE OUR CHILDREN OUT FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL. WE WANTED TO DO HOMESCHOOLING BUT THAT IS NOT AN OPTION FOR US AS WE WORK TOO HARD ALREADY.
WE MUST TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THAT THE STATE AND THE UNION HAVE ROBBED THE DUTY AND BLESSING FROM MOST OF OUR TEACHERS, AND TURNED IT INTO A JOB.
OUR CHILDREN KNOW MORE ABOUT FAIRY TALES AND NOVELS THAN ABOUT HISTORY AND REAL PEOPLE THAT COULD CHALLENGE AND BUILD MORALS, VALUES AND ETHICS TO YOUNG MINDS. WE NEVER TOUGHT WE WOULD HAVE SO MUCH WORRY ABOUT OUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION AND INFLUENCES THAT EFFECT CHARACTER TURNING CHILDREN INTO CONSUMER HUMANOIDS AND DIGITAL NERDS, THAT LILFE IS ALL ABOUT MAKING MONEY AND HAVING FUN. WE LIVE TWO BLOCKS FROM THIS SCHOOL, AND HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE OUR CHILDREN OUT OF Waiakeawaena Elementary School. IT IS VERY SAD.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
