Kau High & Pahala Elementary School

Summary:

Kau High & Pahala Elementary School is a public alternative school in Pahala, Hawaii, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 527 students. The school is part of the Hawaii Department of Education district, which is ranked 1 out of 1 in the state and rated 5 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

The school has a unique racial makeup, with a majority of Pacific Islander students (52.18%) and a significant presence of Asian (13.28%) and White (10.25%) students. While the school has a strong four-year graduation rate of 93.6%, it faces a significant challenge with chronic absenteeism, with a rate of 48.5% in the 2023-2024 school year. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with only 30% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 15% in Mathematics.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student ($19,124 in 2018-2019) and low student-teacher ratio (ranging from 11.9 to 13.4 over the past three school years), these factors do not appear to translate into strong academic performance. This suggests that factors beyond funding and class size, such as addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and implementing comprehensive strategies to improve educational quality and student support, may be necessary to drive student achievement at Kau High & Pahala Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teaching staff great. The administration, the principal in particular, don’t know what they’re doing. I’ve spent a fair amount of time on this campus over the last decade, and the principal seems to spend her time putting out imaginary fires. Let the teachers do their jobs and address their concerns with more than lip service. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
