Intown Community School

Coming from a large public elementary school, the difference that Intown has made on my boys is like comparing ‘Night and Day’. In public school, the boys came home everyday unhappy and angry at any little thing. From day one at Intown, the boys have been all smiles and happy after school. They immediately tell us what they learned at school that day, which was not the case in public school, it was like pulling teeth to get them to tell us anything about their day. When your child is in a good environment for learning, they will want to freely share how school was each day. Another difference from public school was the excessive MAP standardized testing three times a year, which meant that the teachers had little freedom in their instruction and were constantly focused on preparing the kids for the upcoming standardize test. That is not the case with Intown, less standardized testing means the teachers can spend more time on a lesson and less time “teaching to the test”. Intown is great academically. As a neuroscientist, I’m thrilled with the emphasis on phonics and fine motor skills (e.g. cursive writing), which are proven teaching methods for young developing brains. I am so happy that we made to switch to Intown. Not only do my boys love school again, but they are catching up on their COVID learning losses from public school. We are so thankful for Intown, it has been a true blessing for our family. I highly recommend this school!

This is our second year at Intown and my kids love it! At Intown, our family has the sense of community that we were missing from our public school experience. Intown Parents and teachers truly work together to foster a lifelong love of learning in every child. And you will find that this love of learning will manifest in every other aspect of your children's lives...sports, school clubs, reading for pleasure, etc.
Lessons at Intown are thoughtfully crafted to link subjects together, which keeps the kids engaged and helps them gain a deeper knowledge of material. For example, when studying ancient Egypt reading (The Golden Goblet), social studies (research presentation on Egyptian culture), geography (salt dough map of Egypt), art (picture studies of hieroglyphics), and science (learn preservation by mummifying a chicken) are all tied together.
Intown is a true gem among all of the early education schools (K-8) here in Atlanta!

I am new to Intown, and as a Christian educator for the past 15 years, I have been impressed with the genuine love and warmth of the community. The teachers share their faith and connect with students in academic, social, and spiritual matters. The parents come together as a village and support one another in a meaningful, intentional way. The Christ-centered, well-rounded education the children receive asks them to not only know the content, but be able to reflect on it in such a way that they can apply it in their lives.

It's so natural the way the humanities program integrates multiple disciplines, the way the fine arts content is seamlessly woven into the curriculum, and the way children are encouraged to fully explore God's world in hands-on science classes. Being encouraged to be curious and love learning for learning's sake is at the heart of what we do, and it's evident in the success our students have as they enter high school, college, and the workforce!

Although the classes are smaller than public schools, the school is not very accommodating with students of varying learning speeds. If your child excels in math or science, I would not recommend this school since they don't have a large enough class size to create varying levels of classes.

The history and language arts curriculum is very creative, I think the chronological time line and incorporating both literature, history, and biblical studies together worked very effectively.

However, a school should be able to excel in all subjects rather than just a few, since a well rounded education, especially at a young age, can help children discover their passions. After I transferred from Intown to my public school, I realized that I was very behind in math. I went into the accelerated program at the public schools and I found the classes much more rigorous and I was able to develop a much better work ethic for college.

Smaller school also meant less club varieties too.

I give the highest rating for Intown Community School.

Intown School has been a fantastic education for my kids! The school stresses a love of learning, is interesting, hands-on and treats children as individuals created in the image of God. The classes are small and the kids get tons of individual attention. There is absolutely no "teaching to the test" but the kids still score in the 99th percentile on the Iowa Basic Skills test. My kids have never done busy work at Intown, EVER! The school philosophy dictates a low homework load but does send the kids home with reading every day. The expectation is that parents will be involved which is great. I could not have asked for more loving teachers, a better environment or a higher commitment to learning than Intown School.

Intown Community School (ICS) is a perfectly sized school that allows for individualized attention with the small class sizes while incorporating a wonderfully unique philosophy to education. ICS is a covenant Christian school that adheres closely to the teachings of Charlotte Mason. Learning from doing and not from work sheets is what attracted us to visit. Intown indeed proved to be all that it claims! We love it.
