Midland Middle School

Summary:

Midland Middle School is a public middle school in Midland, Georgia, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 441 students. The school is part of the Muscogee County School District, which is ranked 155 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Midland Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia middle schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 312 and 432 out of 500-600 schools.

Midland Middle School's test scores are significantly below the Muscogee County and Georgia state averages across all subject areas and grade levels. However, the school stands out with its exceptional Algebra I performance, with 86.4% of students proficient or better in 2023-2024, significantly higher than the Muscogee County (32.7%) and Georgia (44%) averages. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 96.58% to 96.63% over the past few years, much higher than the district and state averages, indicating a high-poverty student population. Despite the overall low performance, Midland Middle School's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.2 to 13.7 over the past few years, suggests that the school may have some effective strategies or programs in place.

Compared to nearby schools in the Muscogee County district, such as Blackmon Road Middle School, Veterans Memorial Middle School, and Aaron Cohn Middle School, Midland Middle School's performance is generally lower, with higher test scores, lower free and reduced lunch rates, and better overall rankings. The extremely high poverty rates at Midland Middle School suggest that the school likely faces significant socioeconomic challenges that may contribute to the lower academic performance, and addressing these challenges through targeted interventions and support could be crucial for improving student outcomes.

Open Quote I'm leaving this review because I am very disturbed with some of the teaching practices at this school. My child has 6 teachers and only 2 of them actually teach. The students are told to do the work uploaded on their Chromebooks but they're not actually TAUGHT. That's not how school should be run. The children arent being set up for success. They need actual lessons! Lectures, if you will. They have advanced classes but some of the advanced teachers don't teach. They upload work and the kids are expected to just go for it. This is very disappointing. I want my child to have a quality education. The teachers really need to get back to TEACHING. The kids will not learn if all you do is say "watch this video and complete this worksheet." This will fail our children. Something needs to give with this. I don't know if COVID is the reason, or the teachers are just lazy and don't want to actually WORK. Our children are suffering! This is the next generation "being taught" or lack thereof! They really need to do better. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
