Hickory Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Hickory Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school in Marietta, Georgia, serving 397 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Marietta City School District, which is ranked 67 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Hickory Hills Elementary School has had a fluctuating statewide ranking, ranging from 426 out of 1,248 Georgia elementary schools in the 2023-2024 school year to as low as 987 out of 1,231 in 2013-2014. Its current 3-star rating from SchoolDigger reflects a mixed performance. While the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics are generally on par with or slightly below the Marietta City average, its 5th-grade Science proficiency is lower than both the district and state averages. Additionally, Hickory Hills has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 65.37% to 65.49% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, when compared to nearby schools, Hickory Hills Elementary School's performance is mixed. For example, Park Street Elementary School has lower test scores and a higher percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients, while Marietta Center for Advanced Academics significantly outperforms Hickory Hills and other nearby schools. However, Hickory Hills' higher per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio may be contributing factors to its relatively strong performance in some areas, despite the challenges posed by its high percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Open Quote I love Hickory Hills! My child is in the IEP program, and has jumped 8 levels in reading this year! She has also thrived in their arts program , especially the drama program with her award winning teacher. Also, their mentor program to help all students along. I can not say enough good things about Hickory Hills, they are our family Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
