Ferguson Elementary School

Summary:

Ferguson Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Duluth, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 819 students. The school is part of the Gwinnett County School District, which is ranked 65th out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio, Ferguson Elementary has consistently underperformed compared to the Gwinnett County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessment. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 22.1% of 5th-grade students at Ferguson were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 53.4% in Gwinnett County and 48.2% statewide. The school has a low statewide ranking, placing between 809th and 902nd out of around 1,250 Georgia elementary schools, earning a 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Additionally, Ferguson Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 74.88% to 79.98% in recent years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When comparing Ferguson Elementary to nearby schools in the same district, such as Harris Elementary, Bethesda Elementary, and Mason Elementary, the academic performance gap is quite significant, with these nearby schools consistently outperforming Ferguson Elementary on the Milestones Assessments. Despite the school's challenges, it has not shown significant improvement in its academic performance or statewide ranking over the past several years, indicating the need for a closer examination of the school's instructional practices, resource allocation, and support systems to address the underlying factors contributing to the academic struggles of its students.

Open Quote Gwinnett has invested a lot into its schools. This school has some issues with discipline. The makeup of the school is mostly Blacks and Hispanics, vastly minority. Multicultural with some language barriers. Discipline starts at home....(parents)not the teachers to discipline your child. Lots of fighting. Teachers are having to address multiples issues which interrupts the learning time of others. Teachers are prepared with lesson plans but it seem some are stressed just dealing with all the interruption that continue on a daily basis. Some parents are just ghetto. Don't get involve with their child's education and just don't have no clue what's going on. The school gives out lots of important information for students to take home to parents and most of the literature doesn't get read or make it home for that matter. The school has behavior programs but some of the students are just very loud and not attentive. You have your all-star basketball and football wannabes. Plus your rap artist not knowing that in order to succeed you need an education. If you truly want to be something when you grow up, you need an education. There needs to be strong parent involvement for this school be a great school. Teacher and administrators can only do so much because parents are quick to point a finger to blame teachers than to see their faults in raising their children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
