Norcross High School

Summary:

Norcross High School is a public high school located in Norcross, Georgia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,608 students. It is part of the Gwinnett County School District, which is ranked 65 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Norcross High School has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from a high of 122 out of 435 Georgia high schools in 2014-2015 (4-star rating) to its current ranking of 276 out of 458 (2-star rating) in 2023-2024, its graduation rates have fluctuated, ranging from a low of 74.5% in 2017-2018 to a high of 81.1% in 2021-2022. However, this still lags behind the higher rates of nearby schools like McClure Health Science High School (94.3%) and Duluth High School (86.4%). Additionally, Norcross High School's performance on the Milestones Assessments is significantly lower than the Gwinnett County and Georgia state averages across all subject areas and grade levels.

Another key differentiating factor is the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Norcross High School, with 63.61% of students qualifying in the 2022-2023 school year, significantly higher than the rates at nearby schools like Duluth High School (55.07%) and Paul Duke STEM High School (56.87%). This suggests that the school may be serving a population with significant socioeconomic challenges, which could be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance.

Open Quote I am the parent of two Norcross graduates and we were very pleased with our Norcross experience. The academics are top-notch and the community support for the school is outstanding. Close Quote

Open Quote Norcross stands out because it offers the IB Diploma program and a business program called 3DE. Even students who don’t choose these programs can take these classes. There are AP classes offered as well, along with some excellent extracurricular options. The Norcross Foundation supports the school so there is additional funding. Enrollment was reduced recently thanks to a STEM high school in the cluster being opened, so the trailers are mostly gone. The bathrooms could be cleaner, and the science department is in a rebuilding phase. Close Quote

Open Quote The school is all about sports, they even have a very large "arena style" score board in their baseball field. Many students get away with very vile acts and teachers tend to not bat an eye to these occurrences. The bathrooms are not maintained well at all and in general, GCPS school portions are very small. Also the school is over crowded with 3000+ students and 30+ outdoor trailers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
