Main Street Charter Academy

Summary:

Main Street Charter Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in College Park, Georgia, which is part of the Fulton County School District.

The school has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking over the past decade, currently ranking 634th out of 1,248 Georgia elementary schools. While its performance on the Georgia Milestones assessments is generally below the Fulton County and state averages, Main Street Charter Academy stands out in some areas, such as having a 7th-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate higher than the district and state. However, the nearby Bethune Elementary School, Asa Hilliard Elementary School, College Park Elementary, and Heritage Elementary School generally perform better on the assessments. This suggests that Main Street Charter Academy may be underperforming compared to its district peers.

The school serves a significantly higher percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, ranging from 60.19% to 90.96% over the past few years, indicating a more economically disadvantaged student population. This, along with the school's relatively high student-teacher ratio, may contribute to its lower academic performance. However, the school's charter status and focus on grades K-8 provide opportunities for targeted interventions and curriculum adjustments to improve student outcomes, and its proximity to other Fulton County elementary schools could facilitate collaboration and the sharing of best practices.

Open Quote TMSA has engaged my child in learning in a way I have never seen before. She was doing poorly in math prior to attending TMSA, rather quickly in the school year they began to pull her for extra help in math. Her teacher also encouraged her, helped to build her confidence in math along with her dad and I at home. She has made tremendous progress and her dad and I are so please with her overall improvement. SHE NEVER WANTS TO MISS SCHOOL! I have found that they provide a safe and fun environment for their scholars. I am happy we chose this school for our child. When her brother is old enough he will attend also. Close Quote

Open Quote The Main Street Academy has been our home since it opened in 2010. Our older son graduated from TMSA last year and has been doing very well at a rigorous dual magnet high school, so the preparation he received was top notch. Our younger son is in 5th grade and has had an excellent experience at TMSA - nurturing his interests in science and reading. Parent involvement is phenomenal. Lots of extracurriculars and caring teachers. We love the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
