Stone Mountain Elementary School

Summary:

Stone Mountain Elementary School is a public elementary school in Stone Mountain, Georgia, serving around 450 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and above-average per-student spending, Stone Mountain Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Georgia elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past 8 years. The school's proficiency rates on the Georgia Milestones assessments are significantly below the DeKalb County and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd-grade proficiency rates were just 16.7% in ELA and 18.3% in Math, compared to 31.6% and 32.1% for the district, and 38.4% and 45.4% for the state. Additionally, Stone Mountain Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 99.14% to 100% over the past 3 years, indicating a high-poverty student population.

When comparing Stone Mountain Elementary to nearby schools in the same district, such as Smoke Rise Elementary, Eldridge L. Miller Elementary, and Idlewood Elementary, it is clear that the academic performance at Stone Mountain is significantly lower. These findings suggest that the school may be facing significant challenges related to student socioeconomic status, access to resources, and other factors that can impact learning outcomes, and that targeted interventions and support are needed to address the underlying issues and improve student outcomes.

Open Quote The curriculum is sub par and lacks cohesive structure. The teachers are unenthusiastic and lack innovation to keep students engaged. With little to no resources or sponsors, our kids are being deprived of essential concepts and basic state level learning. Stone Mountain Elementary curriculum lacks college, career, and future-ready skills designed to develop and enhance next level knowledge so our kids can excel in the real world. No athletic sports, plays, or recitals, no chess club, robotics, AI technology courses, choir, math club, reading club, science club or fairs, nor scholars, or anything! I have seen minimal staff engagement, no progress or improvement, nor innovative ideas to improve. Very little project assignments, field trips, or tech supplies to boost academics. It is truly disheartening to see our kids miss so much vital and fun experiences due to the district income level. This school is literally preparing our kids for a future with low income standards! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
