Hawthorne Elementary School

Summary:

Hawthorne Elementary School is a public elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with 347 students. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hawthorne Elementary consistently underperforms the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages on state assessments, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science lagging behind. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 52.94% to 59.65% over the past 3 years, significantly higher than nearby schools like Sagamore Hills (23.78%), Oak Grove (5.21%), and Briarlake (25.93%). Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, these inputs have not translated into improved student outcomes.

Hawthorne Elementary's consistent underperformance presents an opportunity for the school district and school leadership to identify and address the root causes of the school's challenges. Strategies such as targeted professional development for teachers, implementation of evidence-based instructional practices, and increased family and community engagement could potentially help improve student achievement at the school.

Open Quote Hawthorne has a low student/teacher ratio which has been a true benefit to my son. The principle / vice principle team work well together and have really turned the school around. The school supports a very diverse community both economically and internationally as well as offering an inclusion program for special needs kids. They do a lot with very little. Test scores can be deceiving. It's a jewel. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
