Sagamore Hills Elementary School

Summary:

Sagamore Hills Elementary School is a public elementary school in Atlanta, Georgia, serving 429 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the DeKalb County School District, which is ranked 138 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. However, Sagamore Hills Elementary School has consistently maintained a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years, ranking in the top 20% of Georgia elementary schools.

Sagamore Hills Elementary School stands out for its strong academic performance, consistently outperforming the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages in the Milestones Assessment for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school had 57.6% of 3rd graders, 56.5% of 4th graders, and 54.4% of 5th graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 31.6%, 30.5%, and 40.8% for DeKalb County, respectively. Additionally, the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.2 to 11.8 over the past three school years, and a lower percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients (23.78% in 2022-2023) compared to some nearby schools.

While Sagamore Hills Elementary School consistently outperforms the nearby schools in academic performance, with the exception of Oak Grove Elementary School, there is still room for improvement, particularly in closing the achievement gap between the school's performance and the state averages in certain grade levels and subject areas. Nonetheless, the school's strong metrics, such as low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending, may be contributing factors to its success, and continued focus on maintaining and improving academic outcomes could further strengthen its position as a top-performing elementary school in the region.

Open Quote The children are treated with respect and kindness. The STEM certification means that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are strongly offered and taught with professional expertise.
There is much parent involvement which enriches the school in many ways. The neighborhood association also provides money and other support to this school.
My grandson has been in the school for seven years, prek through grade five. I am a retired educator who has been warmly welcomed in classrooms as a volunteer.
I can detect excellent teaching and I have seen it here at Sagamore Hills. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
