Stringfellow Elementary School

Summary:

Stringfellow Elementary School is a public elementary school serving around 300 students in grades PK-5 in Moultrie, Georgia, which is part of the Colquitt County School District.

Despite spending significantly more per student than nearby schools, ranging from $11,929 to $14,344 per student, and having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.9 to 13.5, Stringfellow Elementary consistently underperforms compared to other elementary schools in the district and the state averages on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in 2023-2024, only 34.5% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 38.4% statewide. The school has received 0-1 star ratings from SchoolDigger for the past 10 years, indicating very poor academic performance.

One key factor contributing to Stringfellow's challenges is its extremely high-poverty student population, with 96-97% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. In comparison, other Colquitt County schools like Hamilton Elementary and Sunset Elementary have significantly higher academic proficiency rates and higher SchoolDigger ratings, despite serving a less disadvantaged student population. Addressing the needs of Stringfellow's high-poverty student body will likely be crucial to improving student outcomes at the school.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
