Jonesboro High School

Summary:

Jonesboro High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Jonesboro, Georgia, with a total enrollment of 1,535 students. The school is part of the Clayton County School District, which is ranked 168 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Jonesboro High School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia high schools, ranking 323 out of 458 in the 2023-2024 school year and receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Jonesboro High School has seen a steady improvement in its four-year graduation rate, increasing from 76.9% in 2017-2018 to 88.7% in 2021-2022, but this still lags behind the state average. The school's test scores on the Georgia Milestones Assessments are significantly lower than the state and county averages across all subject areas, with only 19.9% of students proficient or better in American Literature and Composition, compared to 42% statewide. Jonesboro High School also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 90.49% to 92.99% over the past few years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. The school's spending per student has ranged from $7,633 to $8,312 over the past few years, which is lower than the state average and may contribute to the school's academic challenges.

The schools in the immediate vicinity of Jonesboro High School, such as Riverdale High School, Morrow High School, and Mundy's Mill High School, also perform poorly on state assessments and have low SchoolDigger rankings, suggesting a broader systemic issue within the Clayton County School District. However, two schools in the area, Martha Ellen Stilwell School for the Performing Arts and Elite Scholars Academy School, stand out as high-performing outliers, indicating that it is possible for schools in the area to achieve strong academic outcomes.

Open Quote Currently a senior.
Dirty school. Rats and cockroaches are so common,
Bad students. Very negative about learning and others. Bullying and harassment is very common.
Administration. Only do their jobs when they see things happening. If you report bullying or harassment, they'll only listen to one side of the story and biasly determine it from there. Will not listen to you even if you have proof or witnesses as long as the other side creates a false sob story. Will not let you call in the witnesses either because of the boohoo sad story :(( will need multiple visits to report things
Some bad teachers.

Great marching band. We're the best in GA.
Talented sports teams. Only thing we're good at. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
