Garden City Elementary School

Summary:

Garden City Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 561 students in grades PK-5 in Garden City, Georgia, which is part of the Savannah-Chatham County School District.

Despite increased per-student spending over the years, Garden City Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools and performs significantly below the district and state averages on standardized tests. For example, in 2023-2024, only 22.8% of 3rd graders, 15% of 4th graders, and 29.5% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 30.7%, 29.4%, and 37.4% for the district, and 38.4%, 37%, and 48.2% for the state. The school's math and science performance is also low compared to nearby schools and the state.

One contributing factor to the school's academic challenges is its extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 64.29% to 87.88% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools. This suggests that the school's student population faces significant socioeconomic challenges that may impact their learning and achievement. While the school has seen increased spending, it remains unclear whether this has translated into improved outcomes for students, indicating that a more comprehensive approach may be needed to address the root causes of the school's struggles and support student success.

Open Quote The teacher to student ratio is more like 25 to 1. The principal is racist to whites and hispanics. some of the teachers try to push parent of "troubled children" to have there kids "evaluated" and put on meds because they have no backbone and dont know how to set limits or handle children. Worst school in the area! There is a rampant bullying problem towards minority kids. white being the minority in the school. teachers and staff seem to not want to do anything about it at all. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
