Hubert Middle School

Summary:

Hubert Middle School is a public middle school in Savannah, Georgia, serving 460 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Savannah-Chatham County School District, which is ranked 128 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Unfortunately, Hubert Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Georgia middle schools over the past decade.

Academically, Hubert Middle School significantly underperforms compared to the district and state averages on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 9.4% of 6th graders, 8.8% of 7th graders, and 14.4% of 8th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 30.3%, 29.1%, and 33.3% for the district, respectively. The school's math proficiency rates are even lower, ranging from 3.7% to 8.8% across grade levels, compared to 22.3% to 27.5% for the district. Additionally, Hubert Middle School has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 85.23% to 94.57% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the district average.

The data reveals a stark contrast between the performance of Hubert Middle School and many of the nearby schools, such as South Effingham Middle School, Coastal Middle School, and The STEM Academy at Bartlett, which significantly outperform Hubert Middle School on academic measures, despite serving similar or even higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students. This suggests that factors beyond just funding and resources may be contributing to Hubert Middle School's poor academic performance, and a comprehensive, data-driven approach is needed to address the underlying challenges and support student success.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
