Quitman Elementary School

Summary:

Quitman Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Quitman, Georgia, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 576 students. The school is part of the Brooks County School District, which is ranked 184 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Quitman Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Georgia elementary schools over the past decade, with a ranking between 910 and 1199 out of around 1,200-1,250 schools. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of this period, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state. Proficiency rates on the Georgia Milestones assessments are significantly lower than the state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 23.3% of 3rd graders, 10.3% of 4th graders, and 20% of 5th graders reaching proficiency in English Language Arts, compared to state averages of 38.4%, 37%, and 48.2%, respectively. The school's math proficiency rates are also well below the state averages.

The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Quitman Elementary School, ranging from 96.88% to 98.83% over the past few years, is a significant challenge. However, some nearby schools in the Lowndes County School District, such as Dewar Elementary and Hahira Elementary, serve populations with a lower percentage of free/reduced-price lunch recipients but still achieve much higher academic performance, suggesting that other factors, such as instructional quality and school leadership, may also play a role in Quitman Elementary's struggles.

Open Quote My granddaughter just finished first grade at QES. She cried on the last day because she did not want school to end. Her reading and math skills at the end of first grade are where mine were in third grade. The school provided a two week Math/Science enrichment camp in which she participated. She loved every minute of the camp and among other achievements learned to multiply (typically third grade curriculum). At QES, every child is encouraged to reach their potential but none are compared to others. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
