Apalachee High School

Summary:

Apalachee High School is a public high school located in Winder, Georgia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,894 students. The school is part of the Barrow County School District, which is ranked 105 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Apalachee High School has consistently maintained a high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 85.9% to 92.1% over the past five years, which is higher than the state average. However, the school's test scores on the Milestones Assessments are generally lower than the Barrow County and Georgia state averages across various subjects and grade levels. Additionally, Apalachee High School has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 40.06% to 49.16% over the past three years, which is higher than the state average.

When compared to nearby schools, Apalachee High School's performance is lower than the Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy, which is ranked 34th out of 458 Georgia high schools and has significantly higher test scores across all subjects. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the past several years, from 163rd out of 420 Georgia high schools in 2016-2017 to 233rd out of 458 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school may face challenges in addressing the underlying factors that impact student success, such as the high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Open Quote Don't even care bout growth of 9th grade students for future personal and team building skills
Coaching staff of football and basketball have no clue on personal care and growth of players to achieve success and people skills,,starts at 9th grade ,which they care nothing about and it shows in the win/ loss records and lackluster communication with parents of players and the " I really don't want to hear it" attitude Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
