Open Quote Our son is in his second year at Wesley. He had an amazing teacher for kindergarten last year, and we were devastated to learn that she left. We've learned there is a high teacher turn-over rate at Wesley, which is very disappointing. We've also been frustrated with behavior issues with other students--basically lack of respect of personal space and inability to instill that value in the students. And we don't believe the teachers have really been trained to implement single-gender education, particularly the boys teachers. Those classrooms often seem overwhelming and I don't see how single-gender is really being used for boys. The girls classes seem perfect though.

The Mandarin Chinese program is amazing! My son loves it and I have been blown away this 2nd year as he chooses to sing in Chinese and write Chinese characters for fun. I also love the IB program, but haven't seen much of it this year. By this time last year we had to have completed 2 IB projects, but we haven't gotten a single one this year.

Overall we think the staff is very caring and they have some great teachers. We like the Chinese program and IB curriculum. We will stick with it for a little longer to see if the school can work through whatever issues they are working through. It has the potential to be an absolutely amazing school if they could figure out classroom management for the boys classes, effective discipline, and better teacher retention... all my opinion though. Open Quote As an educator and parent I have not had a more deplorable school experience. Initially our family was under the impression that this would be a great environment for our student. In theory the concept of IB, Chinese, and single-gender is appealing. Unfortunately, this particular group is not prepared to handle such heavy tasks.
For the sake of brevity here are the main issues we faced: many of the classroom teachers are not well-versed in their crafts or knowledgeable about best practices, data is not used to guide instruction, student behavior is a major issue, and a huge matter we contended with at the end of the year was a severe lack of professionalism from staff.
There are certainly ways to address these issues and I hope for students' sake that the matters are handled. We have removed our student and wish the school the best. Close Quote

Open Quote This is one of the few schools in APS that does not have a primary or secondary attendance zone. Every child in APS has an equal chance of getting in. This creates a diverse student population that most schools can only talk about. Students are required to wear uniform and take pride in their appearance - I believe this carries over into their academics and behavior. The Mandarin program is fantastic! This school is only going up and will soon be one of the best in the city. Close Quote

Open Quote Wesley International Academy is an excellent charter school that offers rigorous IB curriculum, daily Manadarin Chinese instruction, single gender classes with smaller class sizes, and uniforms. Our 3rd grade child has excelled in this school and has had excellent teachers. The BOD and parents are truly committed to fulfilling the school's promise. In addition to academics, the school also has many extra curricular and cultural events that add and support the IB program. We are pleased with our decision to enroll our children and look forward to a bright future at Wesley. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
