Charles R. Drew Charter School

Summary:

Charles R. Drew Charter School is an elementary public charter school in Atlanta, Georgia, serving 964 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Atlanta Public Schools district.

This high-performing school consistently outperforms the district and state in academic achievement, with 62.9% of 3rd graders proficient or better in ELA and Math, compared to just 36.2% and 38% for the district, respectively. The school has been ranked among the top 100 elementary schools in Georgia for several years, reaching as high as 72nd out of 1,234 schools in 2018-2019. With a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 11-12 students per teacher and higher per-student spending than nearby public schools, Charles R. Drew Charter School appears to be providing a quality education to its diverse student population, which includes a significant percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients.

When compared to nearby schools, Charles R. Drew Charter School stands out as a high-performing institution. For example, Mary Lin Elementary School, also in the Atlanta Public Schools district, has similar demographic characteristics but significantly lower academic performance, ranking outside the top 100 elementary schools in Georgia. The school's consistent academic excellence, efficient resource allocation, and strong rankings suggest it is providing a quality education that sets it apart from its peers.

Open Quote I can't say enough about this school. My son loves it and so do we. I grew up attending private school from 3rd grade through high school and let me just say I could only wish that my private school were this good. Their insistance on the inclusion of art and music as part of the everyday curriculum should be commended. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
