Atlantic High School stands out from nearby schools like New Smyrna Beach High School and Seabreeze High School in several ways. The school has a more diverse student population, with 23.38% African American and 11.69% Hispanic students, higher than the surrounding area. Atlantic High has also seen a steady increase in its four-year graduation rate, reaching 93.6% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state and district averages. However, the school faces challenges with chronic absenteeism, which has risen from 15.1% to 35.3% in recent years, notably higher than nearby schools.

Academically, Atlantic High School's test scores, particularly in Algebra 1, Geometry, and 10th grade English Language Arts, are lower than the state and district averages. This may be influenced by the school's higher student-teacher ratio of 19.1, compared to nearby schools ranging from 20.3 to 38.3. Additionally, Atlantic High serves a more economically disadvantaged population, with 51.74% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, higher than the surrounding area. Despite these challenges, the school has seen a significant increase in per-student spending, from $7,971 in 2019-2020 to $11,380 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the spending at nearby schools.

Open Quote If your student is special needs beware they don't care . My child has adhd & has impulse issues & unable to take meds. Grant it my child is no angel by any means, but is not a problem child as well. The school does not see it this way though for a child with adhd they see them as a problem . The discipline lady acts like a child tattling on a class mate. The vice principal has no sense of humor what so ever and will judge your student before they even get to know them. The school is very judgmental, pushy & act like stuck up rich snobs. the front staff do not talk to the students nice i have observed with another student in the office. There was only one teacher there that i liked though Ms. Viola in special ed. The sheriff on campus there was awesome as well he really does care about the kids & all of the kids safety there so shout out to him as well for being awesome, We felt they really just want to push kids thru and collect the money on these special needs kids. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
