Galaxy Middle School

Summary:

Galaxy Middle School is a public middle school located in Deltona, Florida, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,056 students. The school is part of the Volusia County School District, which is ranked 36 out of 68 districts in Florida and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Compared to nearby schools, Galaxy Middle School has a more diverse student population with a higher percentage of Hispanic (44.89%) and African American (14.96%) students. However, the school also faces significant challenges, including a higher chronic absenteeism rate (33.6%) compared to surrounding schools, which range from 26.0% to 35.1%. Additionally, Galaxy Middle School's test scores are generally lower than the Volusia County and Florida state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates in FAST English Language Arts and Math for grades 6-8 falling below the district and state averages.

The higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (59.56%) at Galaxy Middle School, compared to the nearby schools' range of 38.71% to 62.9%, may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance. Additionally, Galaxy Middle School's spending per student ($8,773) is lower than the spending at some of the nearby schools, which range from $8,388 to $10,966 per student. These factors suggest that the school and district may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address the specific challenges faced by the student population and improve overall academic outcomes.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
