Turie T. Small Elementary School

Summary:

Turie T. Small Elementary School is a public elementary school in Daytona Beach, Florida, serving 383 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Volusia school district, which is ranked 36 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Turie T. Small stands out from nearby schools like Horizon Elementary, Sugar Mill Elementary, and R.J. Longstreet Elementary in several key ways. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (65.54%) compared to the 12.2% to 44.21% range at nearby schools. Turie T. Small also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 37.2% to 50.2%, much higher than the 22.7% to 43.2% range at nearby schools. Additionally, the school's test scores are significantly lower than the Volusia district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects.

These factors, combined with Turie T. Small's very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (76.58% to 93.71%), suggest a strong correlation between socioeconomic status and academic performance. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Florida elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years. While the reasons for the school's underperformance are complex, the data indicates that Turie T. Small faces significant challenges compared to its peers in the Volusia district and may require targeted interventions and support to address the underlying factors contributing to its low performance.

Open Quote As a parent of two children that attended TT Small Elementary I am very pleased with the majority dedicated administrators, teachers and support staff. No school is perfect and all school have their share of problems but with the reductions of finances and resources and increase demands for productions and state level adopted outcomes for success I feel TT Small is doing an excellent job. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
