Martin Luther King Middle School

Summary:

Martin Luther King Middle School is a public middle school located in Milton, Florida, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 660 students. The school is part of the Santa Rosa school district, which is ranked 15th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Martin Luther King Middle School has some strengths, such as its high performance in Algebra 1 (96% proficient), the school faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, chronic absenteeism, and socioeconomic factors. The school has a notably higher percentage of white students (73.33%) compared to the surrounding schools, which have more diverse student populations. Additionally, Martin Luther King Middle School has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 33.4% to 43.1% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools, such as Holley-Navarre Middle School and Woodlawn Beach Middle School, which have chronic absenteeism rates around 13-22%.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Martin Luther King Middle School, ranging from 60.74% to 69.24% over the past few years, suggests that the school serves a lower-income population. This may contribute to the challenges the school faces in terms of academic performance, as the school lags behind the Santa Rosa district and state averages in many subjects, including English Language Arts and Math. Addressing these issues, such as enhancing academic support and interventions and exploring strategies to better support the needs of its socioeconomically disadvantaged student population, could be crucial for improving the overall quality of education at Martin Luther King Middle School.

Open Quote King is a great school! I would not hesitate to put my children in that school. The behavior of students is outstanding. You won't find fights and horrible behavior there like you will at other schools. The teachers are awesome and pour their heart into teaching the children. You can tell they really care about their students. The administration is caring and involved. King may not have the state standardized scores that the schools in the most affluent neighborhoods have, (which is true anywhere), but their scores aren't low and students make a LOT of progress each year. In years past, King had a behavior problem, but they also were very overcrowded. It has really changed, especially in the past 7 or 8 years. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
