Orlando Gifted Academy

Summary:

Orlando Gifted Academy is a public middle school serving grades 2-8 in Orlando, Florida, with a diverse student population of 383 and a strong focus on academic excellence. The school consistently ranks among the top middle schools in the state, outperforming nearby schools and the district and state averages in key metrics such as test scores, chronic absenteeism, and student-teacher ratio.

Orlando Gifted Academy's academic performance is truly exceptional, with 97% of students proficient or better in Algebra 1 EOC, compared to just 53% in the Orange County School District and 55% statewide. The school's proficiency rates in other subject areas, such as Geometry EOC, Civics EOC, and Science assessments, are all above 90%, far exceeding the district and state averages. This academic success is likely due to the school's low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.3 to 12.7 over the past three years, which is lower than the nearby schools like Conway Middle, Maitland Middle, and Carver Middle.

While Orlando Gifted Academy has a diverse student population, the nearby schools tend to have significantly higher percentages of minority students, particularly African American and Hispanic students. Additionally, the school serves a more affluent student population, with a lower percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients compared to the nearby schools. This socioeconomic difference may contribute to the academic performance gap between Orlando Gifted Academy and the surrounding schools, which have much higher chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 39.4% at Conway Middle to 57.7% at Carver Middle.

Open Quote My kids love this school because there is no homework. My kids are so happy because they have good friends and many challenging projects at the school. At first I was skeptical with the no homework thing. However, they aced all their standardized tests. My kids love this school so much that I threatened them with "if you don't do your piano there will be no school tomorrow." They hurried to practice their piano lessons with that simple threat. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
