Prairie Lake Elementary

Summary:

Prairie Lake Elementary is a public elementary school in Orlando, Florida, serving 849 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Compared to nearby schools, Prairie Lake Elementary has a more diverse student population, with higher percentages of White and Asian students. However, the school faces several challenges, including a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 13.8% in 2018-2019 to 29.5% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the 17.0% to 33.1% range at nearby schools. Additionally, Prairie Lake Elementary's test scores are generally lower than the Orange County and Florida averages, with its 5th-grade science proficiency rate at 38% compared to 61% for the county and 53% for the state. The school also has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (58.78%) compared to the nearby schools, which range from 18.41% to 81.30%.

Prairie Lake Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 964 out of 2,029 Florida elementary schools in 2012-2013 to 1,455 out of 2,256 in 2023-2024, suggesting the school is underperforming compared to others in the state. While the school has a more diverse student population, it underperforms nearby schools like Ridgewood Park Elementary and Citrus Elementary in terms of test scores and chronic absenteeism. Addressing the high percentage of students from low-income families and the increasing chronic absenteeism rate could be crucial in improving student outcomes at Prairie Lake Elementary.

Open Quote Excellent school, clubs, clubs and more clubs. Kids are fully vested in the school as well as teachers in the kids. It's a shame the ranking it gets. It's a great school. Close Quote

Open Quote Not sure where these rankings are coming from but Clarcona Elementary doesn't rank 2 out of 5. This school is one of the most stable schools when it comes to teachers/administration. They have an outstanding program and they are only a handful of elementary schools that hold accredidation status. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
