Zellwood Elementary

Summary:

Zellwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Zellwood, Florida, serving 493 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Zellwood Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students (50.71%) compared to nearby schools like Lovell Elementary and Phillis Wheatley Elementary. The school also has a significant African American population (21.3%) and a lower percentage of White students (22.52%) than some surrounding schools. However, Zellwood Elementary's test scores, while generally below the state and district averages, show some areas of strength, such as a 5th-grade science proficiency rate (68%) that exceeds the state (53%) and district (61%) averages.

One significant challenge for Zellwood Elementary is its high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.1% in 2019-2020 to 40.3% in 2021-2022, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 55.38% to 59.29% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students. Despite the higher per-student spending at Zellwood Elementary, the school's academic performance still lags behind the surrounding schools, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution, and the school may need to examine how resources are being utilized and allocated to support student learning.

Open Quote This school was rebuilt in 2012, and boasts a new, very professional and well respected principal who is working to make a significant difference in the lives of students. He has put together an excellent staff and encourages parent involvement. Close Quote

Open Quote I am totally disappointed with the current principal of Zellwood Elementary. I heard she was placed "out in the boonies" because there is not a lot of parent involvement, thus, the county would have few complaints. She is very unprofessional and has terrible people skills. I pulled my children out and enrolled them in private school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
