Palmetto Elementary School

Summary:

Palmetto Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 570 students in grades PK-5 in Palmetto, Florida, which is part of the Manatee School District. The school faces significant challenges, with a majority Hispanic student body, high chronic absenteeism rates, and academic performance that falls below district and state averages.

Palmetto Elementary has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 22.7% to a peak of 38.4%, which is much higher than the district and state averages. The school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is also below the district and state averages across most grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 5th-grade science proficiency rate was 36%, compared to 49% for the district and 53% for the state. Additionally, Palmetto Elementary has a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 75.38% to 77.89% over the past three years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When comparing Palmetto Elementary to nearby schools in the same district, some interesting patterns emerge. Palm View K-8 School and Palmetto Charter School have significantly higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates than Palmetto Elementary. Additionally, schools with higher percentages of White and Asian students, such as Palma Sola Elementary and Palmetto Charter School, tend to have stronger academic performance, while schools with higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students, such as Palmetto Elementary and G.D. Rogers Garden-Bullock Elementary, struggle with lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote It's no wonder that this school was ranked below almost 80 of Florida's elementary schools because they would rather have your child sent home for playing with their earrings then allow them to get their education. They violate on a regular basis the policies and procedures outlined by the school board and in their own handbook when it comes to discipline as long as it fits their needs. My child's first referral had a specific list of available consequences and the consequence he received was 2 days out of school suspension, on his very first referral. The worst punishment applicable for this referral was in school suspension. Worst school ever Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
