Pride Elementary School

Summary:

Pride Elementary School is a high-performing public elementary school in Tampa, Florida, serving 937 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in the state.

Pride Elementary consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Florida, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Math, and Science that significantly exceed the district and state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, 82% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA, compared to just 51% in the district and 55% statewide. The school's unique racial makeup, with a high percentage of Asian students (44.61% in 2022-2023), sets it apart from nearby schools like Seven Oaks Elementary and New River Elementary. However, Pride Elementary has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 2.7% in 2019-2020 to 25.2% in 2022-2023.

Despite the higher spending per student at Pride Elementary (around $9,500, compared to district and state averages), the school's academic excellence and diverse student population make it a standout in the Hillsborough School District. While the recent spike in chronic absenteeism is a concern, the school's consistently high performance in core subjects and unique racial representation continue to set it apart from other elementary schools in the area.

Open Quote This school is good in general. I wish they had more arts and after school programs. Kids have many resources(online programs) to help. A lot of homework especially reading and writing. Their writing program in my opinion is advanced and my third grader has to complete lots of essays and book reports all throughout the year. I feel like I didn't even start that till middle school. They have P.E. twice a week, what ever happened to every day?! The school focus a lot on state wide testing. PTA is lacking in this school. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has exceeded my expectations. The staff & teachers are fun and creative and my child looks forward to learning. They are highly invested in helping each child become the best they can be. I've seen my child go from quiet and reserved to participating in activities outside his comfort level and finishing with a great sense of personal achievement. Part of the success of the school is the PTA which is filled with active, caring volunteers helping make Pride the best school around. This is not just a school it's a community filled with parents and teachers investing their time and energy into helping children grow in a positive manner. Close Quote

Open Quote Very dis-organized school. PTA is useless. Teachers/office staff are not very accommodating to pro-active parents. Never see the principle around school. Traffic is a nightmare-one way in and one way out for buses and parents. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
