West Pensacola Elementary School

Summary:

West Pensacola Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 459 students in grades PK-5 in Pensacola, Florida, which is part of the Escambia School District, ranked 51 out of 68 districts in the state with a 1-star rating.

West Pensacola Elementary stands out for several key reasons. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (46.41%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 32.66% to 82.32%. The school also consistently struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 42.6% to 55.6% over the past few years, much higher than the 43.3% to 50.4% range of nearby schools. Academically, West Pensacola Elementary underperforms the district and state averages, with only 38% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA in 2023-2024, compared to 53% in the district and 55% statewide. Additionally, the school serves a predominantly low-income population, with 77.01% to 84.75% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the 56.25% to 92.7% range of nearby schools.

Despite the higher spending per student at West Pensacola Elementary, ranging from $11,414 to $12,311, the school's academic performance remains significantly below the district and state averages. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to the school's challenges, which likely stem from a complex combination of racial disparities, chronic absenteeism, and socioeconomic factors. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach focused on improving educational equity, attendance, and instructional quality at Bellview Elementary School, Montclair Elementary School, C. A. Weis Elementary School, and other nearby schools in the Escambia School District.

Open Quote In response to the previous post, thanks for the insight. I was considering moving my daughter to WPE from Blue Angels Elem. because WPE is 3 minutes away from our home, my daughter wants to change schools and b/c I find some of the faculty at BAE to treat african american students much differently than other students. I found out today through the School Choice program that WPE is a "C" grade school so that has made me some what leery as well. Close Quote

Open Quote I went to WPE for elementary school when I was a kid, and I loved it. The faculty was helpful and most of the teachers were caring. Unfortunately I cannot say the same since my son has started there. He will be starting second grade in 2 weeks. Whenever I call for information I am met by rude administrative staff. I am nearly always talked down to, as if I am the most incompetent person alive. The teachers have been decent, but they are lacking in communication. In the past 2 years my son has been physically assaulted by the same student twice. The second time he was injured and required an E.R. visit. My child informed me he told the teacher and she said not to be a tattle-tale. I took this with a grain of salt until I contacted the school to find out more information. It was true. My son was bullied, did the right thing, and was basically told to stop whining.

Obviously my child and I have had a bad experience if I am writing this review. If this school year does not improve I will be pulling my son out to attend private school instead. I hoped he would have the same memories as I have of the school and childhood.

I would rate this school 0 stars if I had that option. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
