Summary:

Kernan Middle School is a public middle school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 1,136 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Duval School District, which is ranked 54 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kernan Middle School consistently outperforms the Duval district and the state of Florida in various standardized test scores, with 85% proficiency in Algebra 1 EOC, 96% in Geometry EOC, 100% in Biology 1 EOC, and 73% in Civics EOC, all significantly higher than the district and state averages. The school also has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with 39.26% White, 23.06% African American, 22.1% Hispanic, 8.1% Asian, and 7.04% two or more races. While Kernan Middle School has seen an increase in chronic absenteeism, it still performs better than some nearby schools, such as Southside Middle School, which had a 58.7% chronic absenteeism rate in 2022-2023.

Kernan Middle School's relatively lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (46.74% in 2022-2023) compared to some nearby schools, such as Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School (85.47%) and Arlington Middle School (73.56%), may indicate that it has access to more resources and funding, which could contribute to its stronger academic performance. However, the significant performance gaps between Kernan and nearby schools with less diverse populations suggest that more work may be needed to ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students in the region.

Open Quote No wonder the teacher hit the news for calling children the N word at this school. First, academics in this district and school is at the bottom.of the barrel. Teachers are no longer teaching a student when they push for Achieve 3000 to be the instructional source for language arts or I ready which replaces math. The gifted academy here is a joke in itself. It's created to separate the good disciplined and higher achieving students feom.the bad ones. But that still doesn't give students the quality of academics. Teachers calling students retarded in this "gifted" academy says enough. What a child needs is an academic environment where they can thrive at their next level and this is not the place. If your child leave here to high school, they will not be prepared for the already mediocre education this district provides let alone having the academic level to keep up in high school, thus,.if college, definitely not prepared for high school. Students fall so far behind the learning levels that their adult life will suffer. Find a better solution to middle school, this is not it. Close Quote

Open Quote If you have a child with special needs, save the enrollment. This is day camp at its best but one of the worst environments that you can put your child in. Staff is so far behind in the learning curve of what children with special needs need to progress that the child is the only one being impacted negatively. Suspecting a staff member to put their hands on a student is unacceptable at any cost but to force that teacher to retire instead of holding accountable is just one reason to tag this school as awful and deplorable. Save your child's valuable time and go elsewhere. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
