Gregory Drive Elementary School

Summary:

Gregory Drive Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 530 students in grades PK-5 in Jacksonville, Florida, which is part of the Duval school district. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, low test scores, and a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, ranking it in the bottom 10-15% of Florida elementary schools.

Gregory Drive Elementary has a student population that is 61.89% African American and 75% or more receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. The school's test scores lag behind the district and state averages, with only 33-47% of students proficient in ELA and Math, compared to 46-60% for the district and 53-60% for the state. Nearby schools with similar demographic profiles, such as Westview K-8, Crystal Springs Elementary, and Cedar Hills Elementary, generally outperform Gregory Drive Elementary on test scores and have lower chronic absenteeism rates.

Despite increased per-student spending, from $7,893 in 2019-2020 to $9,409 in 2022-2023, and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Gregory Drive Elementary continues to struggle to provide a high-quality education to its students. Strategies focused on improving attendance, providing targeted academic interventions, and addressing the socioeconomic factors that may be impacting student learning could be crucial in helping the school improve its performance and outcomes.

Open Quote To parents of students attending Gregory Drive Elementary this upcoming year, please be vigilant and aware of your child and keep watch for signs of bullying, teacher pressure, and unnecessary aggressive behaviors by teachers.

Know they only go to recess ONCE a week. If that. They consider "resource" to be sufficient, which is library, or video time, or art. They won't get physical exercise daily due to the lack of initiative in the teachers to prioritize this. The adults dont want to be forced outside where they have to vigilently observe, instead opting for a myriad of inflexible rules and rigidity for small children.

This last year, "the greatest school on earth," was rated only a 7 for their emotional support/teacher student trust. That is all clearly outlined on the published School Improvement Plan on their website (linked below). This has been a concerning decline for the last 5 years if you care to check the data.

My son was VIOLENTLY attacked in the bathroom this year and was not the only child to face this kind of school environment. The administration would like people to see only the charade they portray in order to keep up numbers on students, but the culture at gregory drive was clearly defined by the vandalism they saw on the fence last year. Truly appeared to he how the students felt.

You can attend the school Advisory meetings, stakeholder meetings, and make your voice heard, but be prepared, you'll be treated with distain by a school that clearly prioritizes it's adult relationships over its students success. You'll probably be the only parent there at some points, which from kindergarten through 5th, one parent showing up is a problem if we really want the culture to change in regards to bullying and the lack of effort.

We moved out of state, thank goodness, and I want to ensure that ANY parent thinking of sending their child to Gregory Drive Elementary is aware of the real behind the scenes. I've interacted with dozens of students who felt ostracized by their school instead of welcome in such an important time in life.

Here's the data. Check for yourselves.
Be safe. Be informed.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
