Westside Middle School

Summary:

Westside Middle School is a public middle school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 593 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Duval District, which is ranked 54 out of 68 districts in Florida and is rated 1 star out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Westside Middle School faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates (ranging from 49.6% to 54.3%), significantly lower academic performance compared to the district and state averages, and a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (69.98% to 73.82%). While the school has seen an increase in per-student spending, from $6,625 in 2019-2020 to $10,550 in 2022-2023, its student-teacher ratio remains relatively high, ranging from 16.5 to 19.7 over the past few years.

Comparing Westside Middle School to nearby higher-performing schools, such as James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory Middle School and Julia Landon College Preparatory & Leadership Development School, both within the Duval District, highlights the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of Westside Middle School's predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student population. By addressing these key areas, the school can work towards improving educational outcomes and providing its students with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
