Keys Gate Charter School

Summary:

Keys Gate Charter School is an elementary and middle school located in Homestead, Florida, serving grades K-8 within the Miami-Dade school district. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of around 73% Hispanic, 20% African American, and 3% White.

While Keys Gate Charter School has consistently underperformed compared to the Miami-Dade district and the state of Florida in standardized test scores, it has shown stronger performance in certain subject areas, such as Algebra 1 and Geometry. However, the school has experienced high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 25.1% to 40.4% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 76.93% to 84.81%, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Compared to nearby charter schools, such as Lincoln-Marti Schools International Campus, The Charter School At Waterstone, and Somerset Prepatory Academy - Homestead, Keys Gate Charter School has generally underperformed in academic achievement, with lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math. These nearby charter schools also have lower chronic absenteeism rates and lower percentages of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a more advantaged student population. The school's relatively higher student-teacher ratio compared to nearby charter schools may also be a factor in its academic outcomes.

Open Quote Never come across such a terrible school organization. It is 6/18 and my High School graduate is yet to get his diploma. An email from Ms. Baez stated my son could pick it up today but when I went to pick it up they said they are giving them out in groups as people provide their information so now till next week. My son joined the Marines and deadline for his diploma was two weeks ago. Now my 8th grader got his report card today but while trying to enroll him in Miami Dade Online Academy they say Keys Gate has my son as no grades or attendance for 3rd and 4th quarter.
DO NOT send your kids to this school! It is a mess. The principal has no people skills or compassion. Guidance Counselor Ms. Singh is amazing plus several great teachers but unfortunately they don't run the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
