American Senior High School

Summary:

American Senior High School is a public high school located in Hialeah, Florida, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,652 students. The school is part of the Miami-Dade County Public School District, which is ranked 24th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While American Senior High School has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic (66.04%) and African American (31.05%) students compared to the surrounding schools, its academic performance is generally lower. For instance, Barbara Goleman Senior High, which is only 3.52 miles away, has significantly higher test scores and a higher graduation rate. American Senior High School's four-year graduation rates have been consistently high, ranging from 92.9% to 98.9% over the past five years, but the school has a relatively high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 28.6% to 48.3% over the same period.

American Senior High School's test scores are generally lower than the state and district averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Algebra 1 (40%), Geometry (38%), and 10th grade English Language Arts (37%) were all below the state and district averages. The school's higher per-student spending compared to the state and district averages suggests that funding and resources may not be the primary factor driving the school's academic performance, and the school and district should examine other factors, such as instructional practices, teacher quality, and student support services, to identify areas for improvement.

Open Quote As a proud Patriot parent, I am glad to say my child exceeded tremendously in this school. She received scholarships from UF, UM, and UCLA. I greatly thank the American soccer coach for guiding her into these opportunities and for contacting scouts all over the nation to observe her. She excelled in her classes because of her teachers who cared about every student and their education. They helped her make her way through highschool. To the parents who stereotype on this school and feel that it is a danger to your child, it lies upon YOU on how your child evolves in school. Staying involved with their educators and coaches greatly assists with their succession. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
