Morningside K-8 Academy

Summary:

Morningside K-8 Academy is a public elementary and middle school in Miami, Florida, serving 415 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. This diverse school, with a majority of African American (57.59%) and Hispanic (36.14%) students, consistently outperforms the Miami-Dade and Florida state averages in key academic areas, including Algebra 1, Civics, and 8th Grade Science.

While Morningside K-8 Academy's strong academic performance is noteworthy, the school faces challenges with a relatively high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 11.3% to 18.9% over the past few years. Additionally, a high percentage of students, ranging from 68.67% to 87.29%, receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant economic disadvantages among the student population. Compared to nearby schools, such as Holmes Elementary and Arcola Lake Elementary, Morningside K-8 Academy stands out for its academic achievements, but the school's diverse student body and economic challenges are not unique to the area.

Overall, Morningside K-8 Academy is a high-performing school within the Miami-Dade district, with a strong focus on supporting its diverse student population. However, the school's challenges with chronic absenteeism and economic disadvantages highlight the need for continued support and targeted interventions to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed.

Open Quote My husband and I could easily afford the most expensive private schools in Miami for our son but believe strongly in supporting and participating in our local public school. And while I admit we were nervous about enrolling our only child in this school we have completely been won over by the small class sizes (15 kids in his class!), amazing teachers, helpful and friendly staff who really love what they do....I just can't say enough. Yes the school could benefit from more resources but this is true of all Dade County schools and there is direct correlation between parent participation/community support and school resources. Additionally, the historical campus is beautiful and I think as more community support is garnered the school will just continue to get better. Close Quote

Open Quote Our experience at Morningside has been amazing. The teachers and other staff have been awesome, really accessible and responsive. They really work with you as a parent/teacher partnership and as a result my child is excelling academically. The school is a hidden gem in a neighborhood undergoing a lot of transition and there is so much potential here. I am so glad we chose to send our child here since they are so happy at this school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
