John F. Turner Senior Elementary School

Summary:

John F. Turner Senior Elementary School is a public elementary school in Palm Bay, Florida, serving 543 students in grades PK-6 and part of the Brevard District, which is ranked 22 out of 68 districts in the state.

While the school is part of a relatively high-performing district, John F. Turner Senior Elementary faces several challenges. The school has consistently higher chronic absenteeism rates compared to the district and state averages, with a 26.3% rate in the 2022-2023 school year, significantly higher than the Brevard district rate of 14.9% and the state average of 27.7%. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 34% to 45% at John F. Turner, compared to 57% to 67% in the Brevard district and 53% to 55% statewide. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, with 69.24% of students qualifying in the 2022-2023 school year, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

When compared to nearby schools in the Brevard District, John F. Turner Senior Elementary consistently underperforms. For instance, Lockmar Elementary School, located just 2.58 miles away, has significantly higher test scores and a lower chronic absenteeism rate. The school's declining performance over the past several years, dropping from 1044 out of 2029 Florida elementary schools in 2012-2013 to 1926 out of 2256 in 2023-2024, suggests that the school's academic performance has been declining relative to other schools in the state. Addressing the high rates of chronic absenteeism and the high proportion of economically disadvantaged students may be necessary to improve the school's overall performance and provide a better educational experience for its students.

Open Quote Turner is an amazing elementary school. It had the best teachers when I went there myself in the 80s and still do 30 years later now that my children go to the school. They communicate well and are very supportive of the children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
