Forbes School

Summary:

Forbes School is an elementary school located in Torrington, Connecticut, serving grades 4-5 with a student population of 310. It is part of the Torrington School District, which is ranked 133 out of 158 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Forbes School has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (40.97%) and Asian (4.84%) students. However, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Connecticut elementary schools, though its ranking has improved slightly over time, moving from a 1-star rating to a 2-star rating in recent years. Interestingly, Forbes School performs particularly well for its Hispanic and low socioeconomic status (SES) student subgroups, ranking in the top 25-37 out of 99-111 Connecticut elementary schools in these categories. In contrast, the school's performance for White and female/male student subgroups is relatively low, ranking in the bottom 165-248 out of 230-262 Connecticut elementary schools.

Despite its lower overall ranking, Forbes School faces significant challenges, including a high percentage of students (60.65%) from low-income families, which likely contributes to the school's overall lower performance compared to state and district averages. However, the school's strengths in serving its Hispanic and low-SES student populations, as well as its recent improvements in ranking, suggest that there may be opportunities for Forbes School to build on these successes and continue to enhance its academic outcomes. Nearby schools, such as Torringford School, Vogel-Wetmore School, and Southwest School, have similar demographic profiles and performance levels to Forbes School, suggesting that the challenges faced by Forbes School may be systemic within the Torrington School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I do not believe Forbes school administration has been working with the students to have them learn. They have only been prepping them for CMT testing which is not the same as a normal curriculum.
I am very disappointed with our BOE and State of Education for not following through on complaints and concerns. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
