Northend Elementary School

Summary:

Northend Elementary School is a public elementary school in New Britain, Connecticut, serving 231 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly Hispanic (68.83%) and a high percentage of students (81.82%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a predominantly low-income population.

Northend Elementary School consistently performs below the state and district averages on standardized tests, with only 22.2% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 51.4%. The school has ranked in the bottom 20% of Connecticut elementary schools for the past several years, receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its performance is particularly low for Hispanic students, special education students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique challenges faced by these student subgroups.

While the nearby schools in the New Britain School District also perform below the state average, Northend Elementary School consistently ranks lower than these schools on standardized tests and in overall school rankings, indicating that it is one of the lowest-performing schools in the district. The school's declining performance over the years, with its ranking dropping from 169 out of 557 Connecticut elementary schools in 2012-2013 to 437 out of 497 in 2023-2024, suggests a need for a comprehensive review of the school's educational strategies and resources to drive meaningful change.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Northend Elementary School is the last community school in our district, is a small school only 315 students, that make this school very special because everybody know each other. This school have a good welcoming to parents, visitors and for their own staff. I hope more school have the same ambient that you can feel when you visit Northend. Also Northend have an excellent teachers. Teachers that not only educated ours children,Northend Schools have teachers that really care about them. This years that will may change when the superintendent of our district, DR. Doris Kurtz remove our principal and 50% of our staff in order to obtain/apply for a grant. This is very sad. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
