Grand Mountain School

Summary:

Grand Mountain School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which is part of School District No. 3. The school has seen a decline in its student racial makeup, with the percentage of White students dropping and the percentage of Hispanic students increasing.

Grand Mountain School has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state in academic assessments, with proficiency rates below the district and state averages in English Language Arts, Math, and Science. The school's performance has declined over the past few years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 558 out of 710 Colorado elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 633 out of 943 in 2023-2024. The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic students performing relatively better than White students, who have performed very poorly.

Grand Mountain School's academic performance is generally lower than the nearby schools within the same district, such as Venetucci Elementary, Webster Elementary, and Martin Luther King Junior Elementary. The school's racial makeup is more diverse than the nearby schools, but the performance of these subgroups is not commensurate with their representation, suggesting potential equity issues. The declining performance of Grand Mountain School is concerning and warrants further investigation by the school's leadership and the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We only went there 1 year. My son was in 3rd grade with Mrs. Garcia and it was a complete nightmare. She was condescending and spoke down to the kids. When they were distance learning she would talk about kids grades in front of the entire class including calling out a kids who had failed his math test with a 34. For 3 months I spoke to her about my son struggling and she nothing. I finally contacted the VP and the guidance counselor and both of them were useless as well. Neither one one anything to help my son. My son spent an entire year wishing he was dead and hating school.

I gave the school 2 starts because my daughter's kindergarten teacher was amazing!! Mrs. Mendiola was absolutely fabulously and encouraging and a great example for her students.

We ended up leaving GM because of the lack of professionalism from both teachers and staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
