Craig Middle School

Summary:

Craig Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Craig, Colorado, with a total enrollment of 464 students. The school is part of the Moffat County School District RE: No. 1, which is ranked 80 out of 116 districts in Colorado and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Craig Middle School has a higher percentage of White students compared to the state average, it consistently underperforms the state in academic measures. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (32.2%) and Math (16.4%) are significantly lower than the state averages of 44.1% and 34.2%, respectively. This performance gap is particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, such as White students and Gifted and Talented students, who rank in the bottom 25% of Colorado middle schools. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students (41.81%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families.

Interestingly, the nearby Hayden Middle School outperforms Craig Middle School in several key metrics, including CMAS test scores, student-teacher ratio, and percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. This comparison suggests that addressing the challenges faced by Craig Middle School, such as equity issues and resource allocation, could be crucial for improving the quality of education for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Craig Middle School offers a wellness elective with a focus on cardio and movement. My son enjoys the robotics team and engineering class. Mrs. Vanzo just got nominated for teacher of the year. My kid comes home saying "I love school." Close Quote

Open Quote Moved to Craig about a year ago. Definately not happy with the school system. The teachers and administration are more concerned with making the children walk in a straight line than education. Common Core and Teachers Unions are blocking alot of bright futures. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
