Winona Elementary School

Summary:

Winona Elementary School is a public elementary school in Loveland, Colorado, serving around 250 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Thompson School District R-2j. While the school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, it has consistently underperformed, ranking in the bottom half of Colorado elementary schools with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Winona Elementary's student population is about 40% Hispanic and 50% White, with around 60-70% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively low-income student body. Academically, Winona students perform significantly below district and state averages in CMAS assessments for English Language Arts and Math, with only 30.1% proficient or better in ELA and 20.2% in Math, compared to 42.9% and 33.3% for the district, respectively. This academic performance lags behind many nearby schools, such as Centennial Elementary, Carrie Martin Elementary, and High Plains School, which have higher achievement, better school rankings, and lower percentages of low-income students.

The consistent underperformance of Winona Elementary over the past several years suggests that the school may be facing systemic challenges that need to be addressed. The high percentage of low-income students and diverse racial/ethnic makeup of the student population may be contributing factors to the school's lower academic performance, and targeted interventions and support programs focused on these student demographics could potentially help improve outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Winona used to be a great school. This past year they got yet again, a new principal. The last one was amazing. This one has no idea what she is doing. She consistently cancels meetings with parents, doesn't let parents in the building, and the school has the worst behavior I've ever seen there. A lot of the staff and families have left the school because of her. Do yourself a favor, open enroll somewhere else! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
