West Jefferson Middle School

Summary:

West Jefferson Middle School is a public middle school in Conifer, Colorado, serving 502 students in grades 6-8 and part of the Jefferson County School District No. R-1.

West Jefferson Middle School consistently ranks among the top 25% of Colorado middle schools, with strong academic performance that exceeds district and state averages on CMAS tests. However, the school has a predominantly white student population (85.06%) compared to nearby schools, and a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (16.93%), suggesting the school may serve a more affluent population. Despite this, the school ranks among the top 5% of Colorado middle schools for its performance with low socioeconomic status students, indicating it is effectively supporting traditionally underserved populations.

Nearby schools, such as Carmody Middle School, Bell Middle School, and Ken Caryl Middle School, have a more balanced racial composition and higher percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 50.81% to 88.17% white students and 23.18% to 51.62% free/reduced-price lunch. This raises questions about the school's efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and whether the school's demographics are reflective of the broader community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Attendance is a joke. My daughter was on vacation with us for 4 school days, and the school listed her as present each and every day. There is NO accountability.

Teacher feedback is almost nonexistent. Your child could be failing, and you won't receive a call from the school. By the time I found out, it was almost too late for my daughter to recover. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
