Belmar School of Integrated Arts

Summary:

Belmar School of Integrated Arts is a public elementary school serving 215 students in grades K-5 in Lakewood, Colorado, which is part of the Jefferson County School District No. R-1. While the district is ranked 35 out of 116 in the state, Belmar School faces significant challenges, with academic performance well below district and state averages and a low school ranking.

Belmar School's CMAS test scores are significantly lower than the district and state, with only 24.4% of students proficient or better in Math compared to 40.7% for the district and 34.2% for the state. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Colorado elementary schools, receiving just 1-2 stars out of 5 from SchoolDigger. Performance also varies greatly by student subgroup, with Hispanic students performing relatively well but White students performing very poorly compared to other Colorado elementary schools.

Belmar School's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 54.42% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, may be a contributing factor to its lower academic performance. This is significantly higher than the 38.11% at nearby Green Gables Elementary School. Additionally, the school's focus on integrated arts education may be impacting instructional time and resources devoted to core academic subjects, leading to its lower test scores compared to higher-performing nearby schools like Kendrick Lakes Elementary and Dennison Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote School name has changed to Belmar School of Integrated Arts, lots of great things happening at BelArts, I have seen outstanding art pieces by all grade levels, came to amazing choir performances and witnessed some pretty awesome PE math- basketball integration happening in the gym. Very engaging for the students and taking back into the classrooms. I've also only witnessed positive leadership from the principal Ms. Leighty. The staff is warm and welcoming and current teachers have been incredible. Close Quote

Open Quote Bad leadership of the school, Principal Leighty does not genuinely care about students and their families. Teachers are amazing and always helpful. Close Quote

Open Quote The bullying in this school is a BIG concern. The principal does not handle matters fairly. He has his favorites. If you are Hispanic, please look elsewhere for a different school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
