Otero Elementary School

Summary:

Otero Elementary School is a public elementary school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serving 351 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Harrison School District No. 2, which is ranked 72 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Otero Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (41.6%) and two or more races (12.25%) students compared to nearby schools like Broadmoor Elementary and Oak Creek Elementary. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by CMAS test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages across all grades and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 29.3% of Otero students were proficient or better in CMAS/English Language Arts, compared to 37.5% in the district and 44.1% statewide.

Otero Elementary's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups. While Hispanic students perform relatively well, ranking 88th out of 242 Colorado elementary schools in CMAS/English Language Arts, the school's performance for White students and male students is much lower, ranking in the bottom 30% of Colorado elementary schools. Additionally, Otero has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.13% to 63.6% over the past few years, indicating a high proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. These challenges, combined with the school's declining statewide ranking and consistent 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, suggest that Otero Elementary may need targeted interventions and support to address the academic performance gaps and inequities among its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There is a disconnect between the staff and parents. The office staff have an air of being bothered when you ask a question. The Principle and Vice Principle seem to think they are above just about everyone in the human race. They talk down to you. Treat you like you haven't a clue what is happening around you.
Teachers seem genuine enough, but it also seems like they have almost been placed there to follow the 'lead' of what they are told to do. Children who are perfect seem to be liked, and others who aren't perfect seem to be singled out. If your kid ever has a bad day, they won't let you forget it. Often talking about the habitual problem your child has after once incident....like where was this information when it first happened?
You might as well move your kid to a new school, they'll will be labelled, and you will never see a genuine look from the staff again. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
